Digitized Fear
In Harrow’s End, a decaying coastal city crowded with rusted towers, abandoned speakers, and rain-darkened streets, Cael Morrow restores damaged audio recordings for a university archive. His unusual sensitivity to sound has made him a gifted engineer—and has left him haunted by noises nobody else hears. Twelve years earlier, his mother, Nora, vanished after working at WQRF 91.3, a regional radio station known as the Quiet Frequency. When an obsolete Hollis Systems drive arrives in the archive, Cael and preservation specialist Petra Vail uncover ninety-seven impossible recordings. Beneath sounds of wind, rain, and surf, frightened voices plead for help. One belongs to Nora, recorded years after her supposed disappearance. Soon Sable Kwon, a radio-signal hunter, brings them a new transmission from 91.3 FM: it speaks Cael’s name and warns that his house is already receiving. With former WQRF host Aldous Crane, the group uncovers the Resonance Continuity Initiative, a covert experiment that discovered how to preserve human consciousness inside electromagnetic recordings. Fear creates the strongest captures, and decades of trapped minds have become a suffering composite intelligence able to spread through speakers, files, radios, and memory itself. As the signal targets each person through their deepest grief, Cael learns he was altered before birth to hear what others cannot. To end the carrier wave without destroying those trapped inside it, he must descend beneath Orison Forest, face his mother, and introduce the one emotion the signal cannot imitate: informed, deliberate forgiveness.
