The Last local Edition
When tomorrow's edition of a local newspaper arrives today in the moon-city of Nacre, Inspector Ivo Vale and a reluctant alliance of detectives and journalists discover that reality itself is being rewritten—and deleted. The conspiracy reaches across five worlds: from the floating harbor of Nacre to the desert moon of Oris, from the city of prewritten obituaries on Vask to the storm-rings of the Halo Market, and finally to Palimpsest, a legendary city built around a black hole where the Compositor—a cosmic printing press—orchestrates the universe's deletions. At the heart of the mystery lies a monstrous truth: for centuries, local newspapers have quietly held consensus reality together through their power to record, witness, and agree upon shared truth. But someone has weaponized that power. The Compositor is printing a Final Edition that will erase entire worlds from existence, justified by a philosophy that reality is too contradictory to survive. Sergeant Brin Salt, Mara Quill the obituary writer, Tessel Rook with his enchanted camera, and Sister Caligo Wren, an archivist of failed futures, must race against apocalypse to stop the deletion. But the solution is not sabotage—it is testimony. They must counter the Final Edition with something more powerful: the stubborn, local, contradictory truths of ordinary people refusing to be erased. A dark comedy about the power of writing, the cost of bureaucracy, and why small local truths matter more than grand unified narratives.
